TACTIC
Tools to assess & communicate the sustainability of food packaging
COOCK project
2023 – 2024
Project results
At the end of the project, two practice guides were created based on the project results. Both practice guides are available on request from the project partners:
- “Communicating sustainable food packaging choices to consumers”
- “Tools to assess the sustainability of food packaging”
Tools to assess the sustainability of food packaging’
To support companies in developing sustainable packaging policies, several commercially available tools exist to assess the environmental sustainability of packaging materials through life-cycle assessments, or LCAs. However, the scientific basis and integrity on which these LCA tools are based are often not known. Moreover, it is not always clear for which purposes these tools can be used and how the final result should be interpreted. Therefore, several tools for assessing the sustainability of food packaging have been reviewed. This practical guide guides you step by step in your search for the right tool. “Communicating sustainable food packaging choices to consumers”
Food product packaging can be an interesting medium to communicate to consumers about sustainability choices. But how can we clearly communicate such a complex topic so that consumers recognise, appreciate, trust, buy and ultimately sort sustainable food packaging correctly? To ensure that the good intention to consume more responsibly does result in behaviour, it is important to respond to consumers' current knowledge, attitudes, perceptions and beliefs. Through this practical guide, discover all the insights and learn how to fully engage consumers in this sustainability story through thoughtful and targeted communication. Request the practical guide via Flanders’FOOD.

Background information
Following previous projects CIRCOPACK and Multi2Recycle, Pack4Food and Flanders' FOOD want to focus even more on sustainability of food packaging and related communication to consumers.
The TACTIC project aims to bundle and translate knowledge on sustainability of food packaging tailored to companies in the food and packaging industry and their retail customers. Companies will be supported in (i) selecting tools that assess the sustainability of food packaging as well as (ii) communicating their sustainable food packaging choices to consumers.
These tools should enable companies to better design their packaging on the one hand and to better explain their efforts in this regard to consumers on the other. The project consortium aims to set up a knowledge platform where companies can interact with their suppliers and customers on this topic.
