UPCYCLE
SUstainable PlastiC biorefinerY for reCyclable and biodegradabLE packaging

UPCYCLE (2025-2029)
Goal: Demonstrate feasibility (TRL7) to install circular, renewable plastic value chains for sustainable packaging materials by developing eco-polymers (PHA-, PLA-, furan-based) incl. tailored recyclable properties. These polymers will contain smart bio-based additives to enhance their performance & functionality for flexible and rigid packaging.
Non-recyclable plastic waste will be used as a resource to replace fossil-based polymers.
- How? The circular production builds further on the H2020 UPLIFT results. Cost-effective plastic biorefineries use mixed plastic waste and AI, ML and Digital Twin tools will be applied for fast process optimization & to upscale from lab to pilot production of 100–200 kg.
- Who? A multidisciplinary European consortium of 19 partners throughout 10 countries covering academia, industry & end-users across the value chain.
- Framework: Innovation structured around Smart Polymerization, Circular Biorefineries, and Safe & Sustainable by Design principles.
