LEAK

Inline-offline technology for analysing the leak tightness/seal integrity of packaging.

2024 - 2026

LEAK
TETRA project

Introduction - Project LEAK

Leak tightness and seal integrity of packaging are a major challenge for many industrial sectors today. The consequences are significant: loss of production time and manpower, loss of materials and products, higher logistics costs and a negative customer experience due to reduced product quality.

The impact extends beyond economic damage alone. Social and environmental aspects also play a role, as leaks contribute to food loss and waste of packaging materials.

New developments in packaging materials – such as recyclable monomaterials and paper-based, coated packaging – prompted by the upcoming Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations (PPWR), make managing this problem even more complex.

That is why the LEAK project focuses on identifying, analysing and preventing leaks in packaging within the food industry. The aim is to support companies with knowledge and solutions to make their packaging processes more sustainable, efficient and reliable.

Goals

Inventarisation

Inventorying the problems of leaks/seal integrity in packaging, possibilities for analysis methods (inline-offline) with market research, literature study and company surveys.

Research

Conducting comparative laboratory research (statistically substantiated with DOE) on packaging with defined leaks (pinholes, seal leaks, number/size, etc.) using offline analysis techniques.

Implementation

Implementation is central to the LEAK project. This primarily involves matching packaging companies with suppliers of detection techniques, so that the most promising offline and inline solutions can be prepared for practical application.

In addition, case studies are carried out in companies, optimising and facilitating the processes surrounding leak detection and seal integrity. This guarantees the quality of packaging and provides companies with concrete tools to improve their production.

Finally, the knowledge gained is translated into practical guidelines, presented in clear matrices and decision trees. This supports companies in making the right choices and ensures that the expertise gained is widely disseminated within the sector.
